WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY NOVEMBER 22 - 23
SUMMARY: Hope you guys enjoyed the lesson yesterday - I know I was blown away when I learned how we completely decimated the Grand Banks cod!! The next few days we're going to turn our attention towards a different aspect of the fishing industry - aquacultures!!! First we're going to go through a SUPER interesting task that breaks down the basic concept of aquacultures. We MIGHT even get a chance to do a bit of inquiry into local/Ontario based systems.
Tomorrow, we'll be looking at the Indigenous perspective of on OCEAN-BASED Salmon Farming in British Columbia and learn about their LAND-BASED solution.
LEARNING GOAL: By the end of the lesson students will gained an understanding of different aquaculture methods so that they can analyze sustainability issues connected to them

TUESDAY NOVEMBER 21
SUMMARY: We have spent some time talking about renewables and how they naturally replenish themselves... as long as they are used SUSTAINABLY. Today, we are going to focus on the issues that arise when humans use them UNSUSTAINABLY. We will explore one of the greatest failures in resource history: the Atlantic Cod Fishery Collapse. Our hope is that we leave with an understanding of why resources should be managed carefully!
LEARNING GOAL: By the end of the lesson students will have analyzed the Canadian Atlantic Cod Fishery so that they can reflect on how resources should be managed and sustained.
Students will: - Describe trends in Atlantic Cod fishing in Canada
- Explain the impacts of the cod fishery collapse on Canadians
- Identify the role of different groups in managing the cod fishery
- Suggest lessons learned about how resources should be sustained
MINDS ON: Critical Question - How do we use a resource sustainably?
ACTION: Atlantic Cod Fisheries: A Sustainability Disaster Activity
CONSOLIDATION: Critical Question - What are the "lessons learned"?

Today will have us transition to analyzing Primary Industries in Canada. Today's specific focus will simply be gaining an idea of how fishing is done at a commercial level in Canada and how it impacts Canadians. The rest of the week we'll take a MUCH closer look at specific issues impacting Canadians. WELCOME TO FISHING WEEK!!

SUMMARY: In yesterday's fracking lesson, we began exploring different perspectives on resources by looking at one of the most controversial resource extraction practices. Today, we will continue by looking at an (equally) controversial energy source: NUCLEAR POWER. We will start by learning some basic facts and investigating nuclear power's pros and cons. Then it is time for you to form your own opinions about nuclear power as a source of energy in Canada!
LEARNING GOAL: By the end of the lesson students will have examined the pros and cons of nuclear power so that they can make informed judgments about its use in Canada

SUMMARY: Now that we know our 4 basic types of resources for our new unit, today you guys will do a deep dive into a VERY controversial resource EXTRACTION method. After completing some basic overview points, you'll do an inquiry based deep-dive into the industry IN CANADA. Side Note - This was one of my favourite things to learn about since it was always being discussed in politics and I NEVER knew what it even meant. Today we learn about FRACKING!!

MONDAY NOVEMBER 6
SUMMARY: Today we're going to start a new unit on RESOURCES!!! Today we'll simply start by learning what the CATEGORIES of resources are. After we have a basic understanding, we'll look into the FLOW resources that we've all heard so much about. All we'll be doing is getting an understanding on HOW these energy sources generate power. After viewing all our clips, you will form an opinion on which source you believe has the most potential in Canada. After formulating our opinions, we'll take a moment to see how one specific flow resource is SUPER COOL, but has A LOT OF PROBLEMS!!
LEARNING GOAL: By the end of the lesson students will know how flow resources generate electricity so that they can create an informed opinion on Canada's approach to this industry
MINDS ON: What are some of the renewable resources (FLOW) we think we know?
